Les Woodford Memorial Trophy Round-Up

On the 18th July the Les Woodford Memorial Trophy was fished.
Ron Hillier won with a whopping 15.93kg of bream (that's over 35lb worth in old money!). Second was Barry Smith with 13.84kg of bream.
Three other anglers caught over 7kg each, so I think the bream are starting to show more consistently.
 Place Name Weight Peg
 1st R. Hillier 15.93kg -
 2nd B. Smith 13.84kg -

Carp Trophy 1st Leg Round-Up

On the 7th July twenty anglers fished the 1st leg of hte Carp Trophy.
J Kellor caught a stunning 22lb 11oz specimen only 20 minutes into the match to take first place. Lee Jones caught a 7lb 7oz fish in the early hours of Saturday morning to take second place.
Unfortunately for all involved the biggest catch came after the final whistle had blown, as the following night a couple of anglers caught 4 carp and 2 tench from peg 5a!
Place Name Weight No. of fish
 1st J Kellor 22lb 11oz 1
 2nd L Jones 7lb 7oz 1

Evening Trophy 2nd Leg Round-Up

On 19th June the 2nd leg of the Evening Trophy was fished. The winner was Ryan Hayden, with 2.61kg. Second was Steve Fothergill with 2.4kg.

All that fished struggled to find bream, with only the odd fish showing. Conditions were quite poor, with a cold and easterly wind in the competitors faces, no doubt chilling the top layers putting the fish on hold.

 Place Name Weight Peg
 1st R. Smith 2.61kg -
 2nd S. Fothergill 2.4kg -
 3rd TBC TBC -

All Night Charity Trophy Round-Up

On 11th June the All Night Charity Trophy was fished. The winner was Paul Hayden, with an impressive 36.8kg of quality bream. The haul included some really big slabs over 4 pounds. It was caught on peg 40 (The Point) fishing hard against the willow tree. All caught on hard 10mm pellet.

Second was Brian Bockzo with 4.75kg.

Here is a picture of Paul with some of his 36kg bag of bream...

B&DAC's Fun Day!

Back on the 1st August 2009, B&DAC held their first fishing fun day in partnership with the Environment Agency. We advertised the day around Brackley, in local schools, local papers, radio and the EA issued a press release.

Our target was to coach 30 people of all ages and abilities, to give them a taste of the enjoyment of fishing. Bookings were taken in advance and 21 people pre-booked their sessions. When the day arrived, the weather was showery and overcast, which we thought might put people off as the weather was the one thing we had no control over. Not to be downhearted, all the volunteers from the Club turned up and set their stalls up. Kye Jerrome from the EA turned up with his road show and some extra coaches from the Hot Rod Fishing Team from Cambridge.
When the start time arrived for the sessions to begin, all the pre-booked anglers started to arrive, the day was a great success considering the weather, we put 26 people through the taster sessions. We had only good feedback and people asking if we would hold another taster day. The volunteers on the side shows, along with Chris Possinger on the burger stall, all worked hard to make the day a complete success.

The EA gave away goodie bags and a 3m whip to all participants, Middy Tackle donated some stickers, floats and disgorgers, Banbury Gunsmiths donated a gallon of maggots, Brackley Tesco’s donated a bag full of goodies and Muddy Boots Gardening Services donated 10kg of ground bait, Paragon Plant Hire from Buckingham supplied road pins. Our thanks go to all who contributed, with a special thank you to Kye Jerrome and the EA, John and Neula Gray, the members of the Hot Rods and Ian Horrocks, Oxfords ADO.

How do you follow on from this? All these new anglers now have a 3m whip and a rig, so why not hold a junior whip match? So letters went out and a match was organised for the 5th September 2009 at St James’ lake, Brackley. 11 juniors took part, a lot of fish was caught and it was a very close match, and anyone could have won. The match lasted for 2 hours and everybody enjoyed themselves. 1st prize went to Ed Bunker, who won a rod and reel. 2nd and 3rd place went to Benjie Spence and Jack Best, with equal weights, who won 5m whips. Well done all of you.

All competitors went away with goodie bags and a bag of expander pellets donated by Mike from M&M worms, Chipping Norton, Oxon. Thanks Mike.

For everyone who took part or made donations, a big thank you.

Mark Fenning ADB 1st for sport level 2 coach for B&DAC.

Pike Record Broken For 5th Time

It was inevitable...the pike record has been broken again! It is the 5th time this season that the pike record has been broken. This time it was the turn of Matt Mallett to pull out the exact same record breaking fish Ashley caught a few months earlier, however this time 'Margaret' weighed 19lb 6oz (beating its previous record weight of 18lb 6oz).

The pike was caught on Sunday 3rd February in peg 45 with ledgered smelt. Matt noted that the fish was filling up with spawn and that in a few weeks Margaret may be the lakes first 20lb pike.

The cold winter has brought the best out of Brackley's pike population. Not only are they getting caught by the bucket load, but they are getting bigger each time!

Here is how the pike record has changed hands this winter:

 Angler Weight Date Caught
 Matt Mallett 19lb 6oz 03/02/08
 Ashley Rogers 18lb 6oz 27/12/07
 Ben Borton 18lb 09/12/07
 Tony Rogers 17lb 10oz 25/11/07
 Dave Nicholls 17lb 10oz 28/10/07

Here is a picture of Matt with the record breaker...

The lake is likely to produce a good head of pike this Winter, and to keep tabs on all of the action a special Pike Diary will be kept on the Specimen Diary page. Be sure to send your story along with a picture to us at specimen@brackleyanglingclub.co.uk.

Ben Features in Anglers Mail

Our very own Ben Borton features in the 18th/25th December 2007 edition of the Anglers Mail. Ben is pictured in the national magazine holding the then record 18lb pike.

The article, on page 52, says;

"Ledgering mackerel tail tempted this lake record 18lb pike for Ben Borton. Ben was fishing at St James Lake, Brackley, Northamptonshire, when the big croc slipped up. Ben said, 'I caught the pike at about 10am on the Sunday morning after losing two other pike. This is my personal best pike and a new lake record'

A big well done to Ben, and we hope to see him in the Celebrity Big Brother house soon!
